Two world-class state parks, Rocky Fork and Paint Creek, offer a variety of ways to enjoy the beautiful hills of Highland County.

Campers will find many private campgrounds as well as the state park facilities that offer a number of camping options including electric, non-electric and lake views. Rocky Fork State Park

9800 N. Shore Drive, Hillsboro, 4 miles east on St. Rt. 124.

  With 2,080 acres of lake and 1,384 of land. Boating with unlimited horsepower, camping, hunting, hiking, mountain bike trail, fishing, picnicking, with two swimming beaches. 16 boat launching ramps, dock and boat rentals. 200 campsites (70) with electric.

Paint Creek State Park

U.S. 50, East of Hillsboro

  Located amid the breathtaking scenery of the Paint Creek Valley, Paint Creek features a 1,200 acre lake with fine fishing, boating and swimming. A modern campground and meandering trails invite outdoor enthusiasts to explore and enjoy the 9,000 acres of rolling hills and streams of this scenic area.

and Highlands Nature Sanctuary

U.S. 50 East to Cave Road

  In the Appalachian foothills Highlands Nature Sanctuary is an ever growing 2000-acre land preserve containing the awe-inspiring Rocky Fork Gorge. This ecological treasure is comprised of geologic formations such as caves and dolomite cliffs accented by spring wildflower displays. A full schedule of events relating to natural history & ecological self-sufficiency including workshops, guided hikes, and other educational programs can be accessed at http://www.highlandssanctuary.org.
   Open for hiking with wilderness permit obtained one week in advance by calling 937-365-0101. Accommodations may be reserved ahead of time for overnight lodging by calling 937-365-0101.

Miller's Nature Sanctuary

  A steep-walled gorge of dolomite lined with wildflower draped slopes is the backdrop for this preserve. Small tributaries trickle over waterfalls as they make their way to the gorge. April and May are the best months to visit this dazzling display. Access with written permission.
